Which Coating Types Are Used for Paper?
At a glance, the main coating types for paper-based food packaging come down to four:

PE (Polyethylene)
The standard liner for cups and bowls. Great for heat sealing and works for hot/cold drinks and take-out bowls. Not for baking, and microwave use should be short only.

Water-based (Dispersion)

How Much Do These Coatings Cost (Material-Only)?
The cost of a coating depends not only on the material but also on the process. The same PE or PLA can vary in price depending on how it is applied.
Below are ballpark material-only costs (USD per m²). Note these don’t include converting steps like coating/lamination, printing, forming, or certifications.
Extrusion Coating / Lamination
Plastic is melted and coated directly onto paper. It is the most common method for cups and bowls and runs efficiently in large volumes. (double side ≈ double cost)
- PE (single side): ~$0.012–0.030 / m²
- PLA (single side): ~$0.022–0.060 / m²
Best for: when you need stable heat sealing and cost-friendly production at scale.
Adhesive / Film Lamination
Here the plastic is first made into a thin film and then glued onto the paper. The structure is more flexible, but the cost is usually 5 to 10 percent higher than extrusion at the same thickness.
- PE (single side): ~$0.013–0.033 / m²
- PLA (single side): ~$0.024–0.066 / m²
Best for: when multi-layers or special films (like clear windows or foil) are needed, or for small flexible runs.
Water-Based / Dispersion
A water-based barrier layer is coated directly on paper and dried. Popular for “recyclable” and PFAS-free claims.
Cost: ~$0.008–0.030 / m² (higher for heat-sealable or high-barrier grades)
Best for: brands focused on recyclability and non-fluorinated coatings.
Wax Coating
Molten wax applied to paper—the simplest and cheapest option.
Cost: ~$0.001–0.009 / m²
Best for: cold drinks, wraps, or liners where low cost matters most. Not heat-sealable, not oven-safe.
What Performance Factors Should You Compare?
Here are the key things to look at when deciding if a coating fits your product:
- Grease resistance (Kit value): Higher means better oil barrier.
- Water absorption (Cobb test): Lower means less water gets in.
- Heat sealability: can it be sealed or not.
- Temperature resistance: the max heat it can take before softening.
- Cost: PE and wax are cheap, water-based is mid-range, PLA is more expensive.
Hot or Cold Foods — Which Coating to Choose?
Rule of thumb: If the packaging does not clearly say “Microwave-safe” or “Oven-safe,” treat it as not safe.
Hot Foods (Soups, Curries, Hot Takeout)
- PE: Reliable choice. Strong heat sealing, grease and water resistance.
- Water-based:Some grades are heat-sealable, PFAS-free, and easier to recycle.
- PLA (compostable): Compostable, but weaker heat resistance.
Conclusion: For hot meals, PE and heat-sealable water-based are safest. Use PLA only for compostability needs. For oven use, switch to parchment or silicone-coated paper.
Cold Foods (Iced Drinks, Salads, Frozen)
- Double-sided PE: Inner layer stops leaks, outer layer reduces condensation.
- Wax: Cheapest option for cold drinks, wraps, or liners. Not heat-resistant.
- Water-based: Some types reduce condensation and are recyclable.
- PLA: Compostable cold cups and bowls.
Conclusion: For cold foods, pick double-sided PE or anti-condensation water-based. Wax is the budget option, PLA fits if compostability is required.
What Certifications Should I Check?
If you want Recyclable
- Look for: proof that the product can go into the paper stream, such as repulpability or recyclability test reports, or a material supplier’s recycling statement.
- Keep in mind: what’s accepted depends on local recycling facilities. Water-based coatings usually recycle more easily, while PE liners are accepted in some cities but not everywhere.
If you want Compostable
- Look for: official compostable logos, such as BPI Certified Compostable (North America), TÜV AUSTRIA OK compost INDUSTRIAL / HOME, or DIN CERTCO (common in the EU).
- Keep in mind: most food packaging is meant for industrial composting. Home composting requires the “OK compost HOME” label, and acceptance still depends on local facilities.
PFAS-Free Packaging: What It Means for You
In the past, greaseproof paper often used PFAS coatings. These chemicals don’t break down, can build up in the body, and are linked to cancer.
Since Feb 2024, the FDA has banned them in paper food packaging. The market is now moving PFAS-free.
PE and PLA are naturally PFAS-free. Water-based coatings need confirmation, as “water-based” does not always mean fluorine-free.
